Moveable and Fluid: Stephanie on Transitions

Transitions are the hardest. Not knowing what the future holds is even harder. John and I had the exact opposite problem in that we never lived anywhere longer than 12 months (together or separate) before we moved to Taylor St. The new feeling of being settled and now living in a house we plan to live in for lots of years made us equally anxious. What the hell do we do with all this peace and quiet?!?! We’re just now starting to learn what it’s like to live…truly live.

During transitions I try to visualize myself as water…a stream, an ocean, a lake. I try to let myself be moveable and fluid. It makes me calm and prevents me from resisting or trying too hard to control the transition. It’s time for your family to be fluid…to take a new shape. My advice would be to try your best to limit your expectations of what life will be like…or should be like. It’s good to remain in control of some things, but allowing yourself and your family the space and freedom to be whatever is in store next is a gift.
