The Pea Patch: Mara on Community

I live in a building with about 18 units in a great little neighborhood of Seattle. We have a backyard, but noone uses it. The eldest tenant of our building who has been there for years gardens tomatoes and roses along the sides of the building, but the backyard is only home to a clothes line and some shrubs. I long to have a pea patch out there, but the landlord has ignored my request. That’s ok…I’m not sure it gets the right sun anyway. I suppose the hallways of my building are our backyard. I smile and say hello to my neighbors when we pass, but I never really get to know them. Many move out after only 6 months or a year and I find strange faces in the hallways the next day. Ever changing. Now…I am going to email my landlord about that pea patch again.
