The Match: Katherine on Fate
Terence and I still joke that it was the Match that set us up.
I think I ranked Iowa number 2–and had pretty much forgotten what places I had ranked or how I ranked them and then –here comes this envelope that says “University of Iowa Department of Family Practice”. To tell you the truth, I could barely remember much about the interview, and really could not imagine that I would be heading to Iowa . I was having a hard time remembering where Iowa was at that point. You have to remember, if you ever knew it, that I was coming out of a divorce, and really didn’t know where I wanted to be or what I wanted to be doing, but I was going to graduate from Medical school in a couple of months and didn’t have a cent, and needed to start my residency somewhere. I guess having that computer tell me where I was supposed to go wasn’t all that bad.
So my mother and father, bless their hearts, drove to Iowa City with me and helped me find an apartment ($140 per month all utilities included in a basement). The last week of June, my little sister and my 2 cats (yes, I had cats then) and I drove out and I moved in. On June 30,the day before my internship started, I went to the FP Department picnic (at some city park on the river) to welcome the new interns, where I was so nervous I could barely speak; but I did meet one of the chief residents–Terence McCormally. It took about 2 weeks for us to start dating and about 3 yrs before we were married in that little chapel on campus.
So I guess the match was pretty good to me after all.
